Owner pay is not "what's left over"

If your wage is the residual, the business will always expand to fill the account.

"I'll take whatever is left" sounds humble. In practice it means marketing tests, tools, and stock absorb the surplus first.

Put owner pay in the budget as a line item, same as rent. Fund it on purpose.

When cash is tight, reduce the bonus layer before you erase the base wage entirely — then restore the base first when things improve.

Track how many months you actually paid the planned amount. That streak is a healthier metric than a single bumper month.

Clarity here improves both household planning and business decisions.
